About WMTIMissionWMTI is dedicated to helping you achieve your goals by providing the highest quality education in alternative/complimentary healthcare fields. To achieve this mission, WMTI has designed an effective learning environment by employing experienced and dedicated faculty, using the finest instructional materials and equipment available, and carefully planning each individual's learning experiences. PhilosophyPeople are empowered when they are given the information they need to make educated choices about matters that affect their lives. At WMTI, we strive to empower our students by giving them the education they need to make informed decisions about their career path. We instill the skills of critical thinking and inductive and deductive reasoning so that our graduates may think on their feet and make the best choices when dealing with their clients' health issues. We feel that in order to deal effectively with wellness and health issues, the bodywork professional must be aware of her/his own wellness. Our well-rounded programs of study are designed to encourage and promote this awareness. Nothing of quality and lasting value is achieved without hard work and dedication; thus, we challenge our students to apply themselves to their studies. We encourage our students to spread out their training over time to allow for integration of the material and to avoid burnout and stress. Our courses have been crafted with care. We offer no shortcuts to receiving the comprehensive training and preparation your new career demands. Developing the skill and confidence of an experienced bodywork professional requires many hours of hands-on practice. Our programs provide this training. Vision: The Alternative Therapy UniversityWhen WMTI was conceived in 1989, our vision was to create a professional environment that provided state of the art massage therapy training. In the years since its' inception, WMTI has achieved this vision by developing a reputation for graduating outstanding massage therapists and offering high quality educational programs. The school is known locally, regionally and nationally as a premier learning center. The school's management has kept WMTI on the cutting edge by keeping in touch with trends in the massage and bodywork industry. The trend in health care has shifted toward alternative/complimentary therapies in recent years. Alternative health care clinics, appearing in community settings in increasing numbers, offer a variety of bodywork disciplines from collaborating therapists with different specialties. The demand for trained bodywork therapists to staff these clinics has increased as well. A university may be defined as an institution of higher learning authorized to confer degrees in special fields of study. Our current vision is to become the center that provides superior, comprehensive education and training in a variety of alternative/complimentary healthcare disciplines by evolving into the Alternative Therapy University. Although WMTI maintains its official identity as a vocational school, we intend to expand our program offerings to reflect the growth of the complimentary healthcare field and provide numerous career choices to our students. Faculty and StaffWe are proud and fortunate to have an eminently qualified faculty dedicated to high quality training and the personal development of their students, and highly skilled Administrative staff dedicated to doing the finest job possible. Most instructors at the Institute teach on a part-time basis as they have full-time practices in their respective fields. Click on the links to read about our faculty bios and staff Bios. HistoryPlanning for the creation of the Wellness and Massage Training Institute began in 1988 when Raymond Miller, Director hired the services of a professionally trained curriculum consultant to help develop the Massage Therapy Program course structure and guidelines. At the same time, the process for obtaining Illinois State Board of Education approval for the Institute was started as was the assembly of a qualified faculty. In May of 1989 the site for the Institute was leased and the Wellness and Massage Training Institute was incorporated with Ray Miller as the president and sole stockholder. September 1989 saw the first courses offered in the Massage Therapy Program. The nine students enrolled that trimester grew to over 280 in January 1998. The number of courses offered has equally grown. In June 1994, the Continuing Education and the Ortho-Bionomy® courses were added. The staff and faculty have expanded to include over forty professionals of various backgrounds. Community OutreachIn the true spirit of the massage profession the Institute has always recognized a responsibility and desire to contribute to the well being and improvement of the community. Clinic outreach programs were instituted in 1990. Students have participated in Health Fairs at various schools, 5K and 10K fund raising runs for charity sponsored by area Chambers of Commerce, Hospitals, Research Foundations, Senior and Wellness organizations. Our Student Massage Clinic opened on the Institute campus in June 1991 making one-hour massage sessions available to the public at a nominal fee. In addition, a variety of bodywork and wellness classes are scheduled on an ongoing basis to provide an introduction to the world of bodywork and stress reduction to the community. FacilityOur new, state-of-the-art facility has been built from the ground up to provide a welcoming learning environment for students.
